Self care: skin care habits to add to your routine

As part of self care, in recent times I have decided to be a little more proactive concerning my skin care habits and routine.

I believe the body is the temple of God, and its needs to be maintained. Also as one grows older, the skin needs more help than before

So here goes some routines I try to follow, bearing in mind that as an adult sufferer of acne my face has come a long way.

#1 Add serums to your face routine

Serums are wonderful. They are concentrated active ingredients that penetrate deeper into the skin and help with specific skin concerns. Since I introduced serums into my face routine, there has been a noticeable difference in my skin specifically with the vitamin c serum and hyaluronic acid. They are generally applied before a moisturizer.

Benefits:
Depending on the type, serums can hydrate, moisturize, brighten, prevent acne, rejuvenate and fight effects of aging.

Vitamin C: helps skin repair process, increases collagen production, brighten.
Hyaluronic acid: helps to retain moisture and deeply hydrates the skin.

#2 Cleanse and Exfoliate regularly

*Cleanse your face daily. Use mild cleansers. When you apply a cleanser, it’s best to let it sit even if its for a few seconds before washing it off. It does make a difference.

*The frequency at which you exfoliate depends on your skin type. Because I do have a dry skin I exfoliate regularly with a mild exfoliating face wash from St.Ives. Neutrogena also has some great exfoliating products I have tried.

Benefits:

Exfoliating removes dead skin, promotes cell rejuvenation and allows your products to get into your pores. Also after shaving I have decreased likely of the occurrence of ingrown hairs when I exfoliate.

#3 Always Use sunscreen

I started using sunscreen some two years ago after thinking for many years that black people don’t burn. We do just not so obvious and the effects of sunburn would be seen as we age. Also use skin care products containing spf.

Benefits:

It blocks out harmful UV rays that cause damage to the skin.

#4 Moisturize

After using all the serums, you still need a moisturizer. Not matter what type of skin you have dry, oily or combination you will need a moisturizer.

Benefits:

It prevents dry skin and creates a layer of protection around your skin

#5 Use eye cream

Eye creams are useful. The skin around the eye are quite delicate, sensitive and prone to effects of aging such as wrinkles, dark circles and fine lines. Its not that we wouldn’t age, but we got to age in style. Hence the need for an eye cream.

Benefits:

It Moisturizes, fights puffiness and gives your eyes a brightening lift. Be gentle with application.

#6 Wash bed covers regularly

It would be working against your skin care routine to have a clean body and then go lie on dirty pillows and sheets.

Note: Before using any skin care product, check reviews and the ingredients. Read the labels, the less chemicals they contain the better. There are different skin care products targeting different skin types and issues, once you find a product that works stick with it. You may not see the benefits immediately but in future your skin will thank you.
